The Lack of Shame

Did your mother ever say to you, “You ought to be ashamed of yourself?” (Maybe mothers do not say that anymore.) The ability to feel shame is a virtue. Of course, it is better to not do anything of which you ought to be ashamed. But it is a moral low when a person reaches the point in which he can do wrong and feel no shame.

Jeremiah the prophet had this to say about his people, “Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? Nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush.” (Jeremiah 5:15) These words of Jeremiah could very well describe many in our world today who, to use the words of another prophet, “Declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not.” (Isaiah 3:9)

People today are no longer embarrassed by their sins. In fact many flaunt their evil, for example, same sex marriages, co-habitation without marriage, vulgar speech, etc.
