Christians & Government

This week we celebrate our American independence. It is a good time to think about our responsibility to our government. Consider the following:

  1. We are to be law-abiding citizens: “Let every soul be subject to the higher powers.” (Romans 13:1a)

  1. God did not intend that man should live in anarchy so He ordained government. “There is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.” (Romans 13:1b)

  1. As Christians we are to pray for our rulers. “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for kings, and for all that are in authority.” (1 Timothy 2:1-2a)

  1. The purpose of our prayers for rulers is also stated: “That we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.” (1 Timothy 2:2b)
