Hopelessness

Life is difficult. Various things can cause one to suffer great hardship and pain. Natural disasters, such as the recent hurricane that flooded many homes and took several lives. Health issues, such as an unexpected cancer diagnosis or mental illness. Other people’s actions, such as the drunk driver who causes a loved one to be lost in a fatal accident. These uncontrollable events and others can wreak havoc on a person’s life. Sometimes, people cause their own problems. Poor life choices can lead to financial hardship, marital problems, and a host of other issues.

For Christians, many coping mechanisms are not allowed. We can’t drown our sorrows in alcohol. We can’t avoid reality by using mind-altering illegal drugs. We can’t end our suffering by suicide. So what can a Christian do when life is bleak, cheerless, dark? When each day feels darker and more hopeless than the last?

Trust. Trust that God understands. Trust that God hears and will answer prayers for deliverance. Trust God’s Word and read it habitually. Trust that even if life remains dark, there will be unimaginable joy in the next. Trust that God is with us always, even in the depths of our sorrow and hopelessness. Trust the promise of God in Hebrews chapter 13 verse 5, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.
