Paul’s Inspired Description of Christ

In 1 Corinthians 1:30, Paul writes, “But by His [God’s] doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption…” Think for a moment what Paul is saying about all that Christ has done for us:

He is wisdom from God – Christ is the embodiment of God’s perfect instruction and the proof and result of God’s plan.

He is righteousness – He lived a perfect and righteous life according to God’s plan (the wisdom from God). He is everything that is right in the sight of God and is the example of obedience to God that we should strive to follow. Our righteousness before God is only possible because of Him.

He is sanctification – Because of God’s plan (the wisdom from God), and Christ’s perfect obedience to that plan (righteousness), Christ became, or made possible, our purification from a world of sin. We have been cleansed and set apart for a very special purpose because of Christ.

He is redemptionThe price for our sins was paid by Christ’s precious blood, shed on the cross. It is only through Him that we are redeemed.

In this single verse, Paul describes exactly who Christ is and what He has done for each of us.
