It is sometimes difficult for me (and my son, who has inherited this weakness) to pay attention. We have all experienced becoming distracted or losing focus at times in our lives.
It is also difficult, at times, for us to stay focused on God’s word and God’s instructions. The Bible tells us, “…we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it” (Hebrews 2:1). This verse emphasizes just how important it is to stay focused, spiritually speaking, and provides the critical reason.
We need to “pay much closer attention” to the word of God to remain faithful to it. How many times have we read an entire page of a book, driven our car to work or school, or even sat through a worship service and then ultimately realized that our mind was distracted and that we failed to remember much of anything? Because we lost focus and did not pay close attention, those events became routine and unimpactful.
If we fail to focus on and regularly practice the word of God, we put ourselves in great danger, not only of God’s word becoming routine but of slowly becoming separated from it. God’s word demands and deserves our “much closer attention.”
