In Isaiah 7:14, God’s word gives us the prophecy of a child being born to a virgin. The text tells us, “Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). The name “Immanuel” literally means “God is with us” and this prophecy is in response to the great fear of God’s people as their enemy prepares for attack more than 700 years before Christ is born.
“Immanuel” is a sign to give the people comfort. God says, “Take care and be calm, have no fear…” (Isaiah 7:4). Their enemy is close, but God is closer. The same is true for us today.
“Immanuel” is a sign to give the people hope. This prophecy of future events assures them that God has a plan yet to unfold. As Christ is the ultimate fulfillment, the same is true for us today.
“Immanuel” is a sign to give the people peace. Once comfort and hope replace their fear, the people can experience peace. Today we can know a peace that comes only from God (Philippians 4:7).
The promise of Immanuel is a promise from God given to the Israelites and Christians today (Matthew 1:23).
