We sing a song every now and then called “Jesus Is Coming Soon,” but when is soon? There will be those who try to look at what is written in the Bible and say this is when will it be, and there are others who have a different opinion of when it will be. However, what Jesus says in Matthew 24:36 is that no one knows of the day or the hour.
So, where does the confusion come from? In Matthew 24, Jesus spoke of signs. However, these signs that He was speaking of were not the end of times, but instead the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. Others look to Revelation to tell them when the end will be. However, the book starts by saying, “the things which must soon take place” (Revelation 1:1), speaking of the fall of Rome. No where in the Bible is there a hint, a clue, or a date of when Jesus is coming back.
With no clue when Jesus is truly going to return, we must live as if it will be soon. If He comes right now, we will be ready because He will catch us having been prepared and working (Matthew 25:1-30). If He comes tomorrow, a year from now, or in many years, will He find the same outcome? He has told us of His coming back, promised the faithful a home, and given us the path to follow. It doesn’t matter when He returns, as long as we are living for Him to come right now.
