One of the great, if not the greatest blessings that mankind can rejoice in, is the ability to be reconciled to God in Christ. In Colossians 1:19-23, Paul makes this very point and even builds on this by showing the Colossians that the fullness of God dwells in Christ. It was through Christ that God opened the only path in which true peace and reconciliation can happen. In short, God opened a path by which sinful people can be restored.
To fully understand and appreciate just how grand this blessing was, Paul reminds the Colossians, and us as well, that we were at one time alienated and enemies of God because of our sin. However, God still allowed a way for us to become holy, blameless, and above reproach in His sight. This plan was paved through the obedience of the Gospel, which includes baptism for the remission of our sins. In baptism we are united with Christ’s death and resurrection, the very foundation of our hope.
Paul adds a serious warning about the possibility of falling in verse 23 and gives the call to steadfastness. Since we have enjoyed such a great blessing, we are to remain steadfast in Him and not stray to the world. Let us remain anchored in Christ, grateful for His sacrifice and determined to continue faithfully until the end.
