There are many ways one might depict a Christian. In 2 Timothy 2, Paul describes the Christian as a soldier, an athlete, and even a farmer. While each of these illustrations has merit in helping us understand the Christian life, let us focus on the image of the soldier. Throughout Scripture, the Christian life is described as a warfare between good and evil. In 1 Peter 5:8, Peter warns us about the enemy, the Devil, who is always on the prowl, seeking someone to devour.
When we consider the ongoing nature of this battle and the relentless enemy we face, it can sometimes feel as though there is no hope. However, God has provided everything we need to withstand the Devil’s attacks. As Ephesians 6:11 reminds us, when we put on the whole armor of God, we are equipped to stand firm. Though the Devil may come against us, we can remain ready and able to fight.
There is hope for the Christian. The battle may not be short, and it may not be easy, but we must remember what we are fighting for. At the end of it all stands a crown of righteousness, awaiting those who remain faithful and victorious. Let us not be among those who give up, but among those who press forward toward that crown.
