How can anything be effective if the manual was written nearly two thousand years ago? Times and cultures have changed dramatically. Consider the growth and advancement in technology, the medical field, and the overall knowledge people possess today. At first glance, it may seem illogical to take a document from so long ago and use it to guide modern life.
Because of these changes, many have tried to reinterpret the Bible. Some conclude that since it was written in another time, it cannot mean the same thing for people living in the twenty first century. They suggest the commands must be adjusted, or that reaching people requires something more appealing than simply teaching the Word of God.
These are dangerous thoughts when approaching the Bible. It did not originate with mankind, who changes over time, but was inspired by God who never changes (Hebrews 13:8). The Bible still effectively guides holy and righteous living today. It is not filled with outdated ideas but remains living, relevant, and sufficient for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3).
It is time for a change, but not one in doctrine. No, instead it is time for a change in our lives. How closely are we living by God’s Word? How well are we staying away from sin? How much do we treasure and hold precious the Word of God and live by it daily? By questioning what needs to change in our lives, we may be able to live for God more every day.
