Remember when you were little and your parents said your name, they expected your complete attention? They did this for a variety of reasons; you were going to walk into a busy street without noticing the cars, you were close to breaking something and didn’t realize it, or maybe you were just doing something that you weren’t supposed to be doing, so they got your attention. When our parents used this voice, we knew it was not a time to talk but instead was a time to listen.
When we read the story of Samuel, he was told to say a phrase we should heed today, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3:9). When is the last time we applied this to our lives? Approaching God’s Word not to see what we are going to say about it, but what it says to us. Just like when we were kids, it’s not a time for us to speak but just listen to what our Heavenly Father has told us. We should take on an attitude of Samuel, going to God’s Word to hear what He has to say to us as His servants.
